Root Canals

When a tooth’s inner nerve becomes decayed or infected, a root canal may be necessary to restore the tooth to health and function. Root canals usually require a single appointment at our Wyckoff, NJ dental practice. Following the root canal, our dentist may place a dental crown to protect your teeth against any further breakage or damage.

Our dentist may recommend a root canal for one of the following reasons:

  • The tooth pulp has begun to decay
  • An abscess or serious infection has developed inside the tooth
  • The tooth has received trauma or injury

Procedure

At your appointment, our dentist will thoroughly clean your tooth and then remove decay and infection. Then the dentist will fill and seal the tooth’s roots and inner cavity with medicated dental materials. The dentist will then seal the tooth with a filling. Your custom crown will be placed either at this appointment or another subsequent visit.

It is considered normal to experience some discomfort shortly after the treatment. This will subside as the tooth and gums heal. To prevent future infection and decay, remember to practice good oral hygiene as well as attend your regular dental visits with our Wyckoff, NJ dentist.

Post-Op Instructions

Following your root canal, it is normal to experience some soreness or discomfort, especially when chewing. The dentist may prescribe pain medication to help reduce any pain or discomfort you experience. If you were prescribed any antibiotics, remember to also take those as directed.

To reduce any present swelling, try rinsing three times a day with salt water. Try mixing one teaspoon of salt in a cup of very warm water to get an effective mixture.  Remember to avoid any hard or sticky foods (especially chewing gum) and chew on the side of the mouth opposite the treated area.  To keep your oral health up to par, continue to brush your teeth as normal, but floss carefully to avoid damage to the weakened tooth before the placement of the crown.
