Crowns

A dental crown (or dental cap) is a restoration that our dentist will use to restore a tooth to its ideal size and shape. Crowns will strengthen and protect teeth in a way that dental fillings cannot. Crowns can also be made using tooth-colored materials for a naturally beautiful appearance.

Our Wyckoff, NJ dentist may recommend a dental crown for one or more of the following reasons:

  • To restore teeth that have broken, decayed, or fractured
  • To enhance the beauty of a tooth
  • To replace fillings that are fractured or too large
  • On a root-canal treated tooth

Procedure

Dental crowns are usually placed over the course of two appointments. At the first appointment, the dentist will take several molds of your teeth that are used to create both the final crown and the temporary crown. At this time, the temporary crown will be placed after the dentist cleans away the tooth decay and shapes the tooth.

Your second appointment will be several weeks later. During this appointment the temporary crown will be removed and your tooth will once again be thoroughly cleaned. The dentist will then place your final crown for optimal functional and aesthetic results.

Post-Op Instructions

After the dentist has placed your final crown, avoid eating on the tooth for at least 24 hours following the appointment. This allows the cement to completely bond, giving you a more secure and stable restoration. It is normal to experience sensitivity in the tooth for a few days to a few weeks after the procedure is complete. If you have any questions or concerns about your crown, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.
